Sharon Miller

Position: Service Development Manager
Team: Great Estates Programme and Gypsy & Travellers Service
Division and Department: Resident Services Division - Housing & Modernisation
Length of service: 23 years

I joined Southwark Council to gain experience of working within the public sector, as well as the incentive of the council providing flexible working hours. I began as an Administrative Officer for the Tenancy Relations Service (1996 to 1998) and went on to the role of Project Officer within the Bellenden Renewal Area regeneration scheme (1997 to 2007). After completing a 2 year BTEC building studies course and a HNC in Building Surveying, I was promoted to Project Manager. The East Peckham & Nunhead Renewal areas were declared between 2008 to 2015, and I was promoted to a Renewal Surveyor. After joining Asset Management (2016 to 2018) as a Building Surveyor within the Specialist Services Team, I decided to apply for a secondment opportunity within Resident Services (2018 to present) to broaden my career prospects, and project managed the building works on the Ilderton Road Gypsy and Travellers Site. Further enhancement of my career was being appointed to the position of Service Development Manager for the Great Estates Programme.

My key achievements have been winning 4 awards whilst working within the Renewal areas. Also being the first London borough to carry out reconfiguration works on their gypsy and travellers sites as part of fire safety compliance. My proudest moment was being asked to be a guest speaker at one of Southwark’s black workers annual forum to help young black professionals excel in the field.

Having grown up on a Southwark estate and now working on the Great Estates Programme, I am looking forward to investing my skills, knowledge and experience back into the community, through my work.
