Position: Head of Constitutional Services
Team: Constitutional Team
Division and department: Law and Democracy / Finance and Governance
Length of service: 5 years

I joined Southwark council in 2015 as I was looking for a career move and new opportunities having worked at another local authority for twelve years. A highlight of working in a place like Southwark is that there have always been interesting challenges and opportunities for making a difference in the lives of people who live and work or do business in Southwark.

I was born in Carluke, Scotland and later left for Nigeria when my parents returned home. I have a law degree; qualified as a barrister and solicitor in Nigeria and have a postgraduate certificate in management practice from a UK university. I completed the Governance Management Development Programme, a programme run by the Institute of Leadership and Management.

Prior to my roles working in local government, I worked in a number of roles in the private sector as a lawyer, company secretary and a short stint at a housing association, as a Governance Adviser. I am currently the Head of Constitutional Services with responsibility of leading and managing the constitutional team to ensure that the service complies with the council's statutory and constitutional obligations. This includes ensuring that the decision-making processes within the council is in accordance with the highest standards of corporate governance.

Southwark has been an engaging authority whose mantra of “treating residents as if they are a valued member of our own family and to be open, honest and accountable” is demonstrated by colleagues across board. I work with very talented colleagues who play a key role in delivering the councils’ objectives.
