When you join online, you have immediate access to eBooks and eAudiobooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers and eResources

You do not need to be a member to enter and spend time in a Southwark Library and you do not need to live in Southwark to be a member.

Our libraries are free and accessible spaces that are open to anyone, regardless of where they live or where they were born.

Library computers are free to use but do require proof of ID. We encourage you to join the library as a full member so that you can borrow books, CDs and DVDs, and make use of our online services. This requires proof of your address, which can be temporary or shared accommodation, or your home address if you are a visitor from another country.

When you join online, you'll be given a temporary membership number which will expire after one 120 days. If you wish to become a permanent library member, visit any Southwark library to collect your free Southwark Presents card. This will give you access to the library as well as offers and discounts at a range of local cultural partners.

To receive your card, you'll need to bring your temporary membership number and one form of identity (ID) with your full name and current address, such as:

  • a recent utilities bill (last six months)
  • rent / child benefit / pension book
  • current driving licence
  • bank / credit card statement (last six months)
  • building society book

If you’re under 18, a parent or carer will need to sign the form as your guarantor.
