Sheltered housing

We provide comfortable sheltered housing to older and disabled people who want to continue living independently in their own homes.

Our sheltered homes:

  • are purpose-built or specially adapted
  • are offered unfurnished and self-contained, with one bedroom, a living room, small kitchen and bathroom
  • provide communal facilities, including lounges, gardens and laundry rooms
  • provide a 24-hour alarm service

We manage sheltered homes alongside local housing associations across the borough.

You can find out more about sheltered housing in Southwark, by reading our guide on Life begins at 60 (PDF, 1.1mb)

Supporting you

We offer support to help our residents stay independent and maintain a good quality of life, including:

  • the opportunity to meet new friends
  • a friendly and secure environment
  • an introductory tenancy that will lead to a secured tenancy after a year
  • a dedicated Sheltered Housing Officer (Monday – Friday, 8am - 4pm)
Our Sheltered Housing Officers can not provide personal care services or carry out daily tasks like shopping, cooking meals or cleaning. For these services, you’ll need an assessment from adult social care

Who can apply

You may apply, if:

  • you are over 55 with a disability
  • you are over 60
  • your support needs aren’t being met in your current property

How much does it cost

The overall cost of sheltered housing will include:

  • the cost of renting your home
  • the costs of electrical supplies (there’s no gas within the schemes)

Depending on your situation, you may qualify for Housing Benefits. You may also be entitled to exemption from Council Tax.
