Bermondsey Street Streetspace

Scheme background

In 2022, we made the following measures on Bermondsey Street permanent:

  • a permeable filter between Whites Grounds and Morocco Street by using bollards
  • designated loading bays
  • an advisory contra-flow cycle lane in the northern section of Bermondsey Street, with the added benefit of improving cycle safety

However, these measures are still in place using temporary materials.

Bermondsey Street Permanent Measures Consultation

Between 5 December 2022 and 27 January 2023

We're now consulting on proposals to implement permanent improvements on Bermondsey Street to replace the temporary measures. This mostly includes pavement widening to make travelling on the street more comfortable.

We're also proposing to replace the closure with an automated number plate recognition camera to improve accessibility for the emergency services, but still restrict access for motor vehicles.

Previous consultation

We conducted a consultation between 26 July and 19 September 2021 regarding the traffic filter installed on Bermondsey Street and asked respondents whether they would like to keep, remove or keep the measures with changes. We received 668 responses to the consultation, which is a 20% response rate. 68% of these responses were from local residents. 65% of all respondents were in favour of making the scheme permanent, or making the scheme permanent with some amendments.

Monitoring was undertaken in three waves throughout the experimental period. Monitoring data for the area shows that:

  • vehicle volumes decreased between August 2020 and August 2021, when vehicle volumes were trending up
  • vehicle speeds reduced by 0.9mphs on weekdays and 0.4mph at weekends during this same period
  • the modal share of cyclists increased across most areas but decreased on Morocco Street and Tanner Street
  • junction turning counts showed a decrease in vehicle volumes from October 2018 to July 2021
  • there have been three reported collisions on Bermondsey Street since 2019, one was a pedestrian injured by a taxi, one a pedestrian injured by a cyclist and one was a cyclist injured by a car

The outcome of this review and statutory consultation informed the final decision, which was to make the measures permanent subject to further consultation on designs to reduce traffic on Tanner Street.

The full decision making documents can be found here on our website. Details of the subsequent statutory consultation can be found here.
