Peckham Square

Peckham Arch

As part of the ongoing discussions for the re-design of Peckham Square, many residents have said that they would like to see the arch removed.

This is similar to the conversations in 2016 when 80% of residents asked did not want to see the arch retained. There was positive support from the community to drastically improve or completely remove the arch from its current location.

The reasons for removing the arch are still the same as many points set out in the 2016 application, including:

  • retaining the arch has a significant impact on the development potential of the two adjacent sites; the removal of the arch would permit a development and a significantly larger development on site
  • the removal of the arch would also allow for more commercial and/or community space on the ground floor; this could increase employment and small business opportunities for local people and encourage a diverse mix of uses in and around the square
  • a larger development on site 1 would also allow for a 'wrap around' façade into the square, and allow active frontages facing the square (at present there are dormant frontages, for example, the rear of buildings); this would provide better natural surveillance in the evening, making the square feel safer, more inviting and encouraging better use of the square at all times of day
  • removing the arch would open up the square, providing a better view and making it feel better connected to the high street
  • the current cycle route through the square is problematic as there are several ramps and turns; by removing the arch, it will allow the ground to be levelled off for better and safer access to and through the square
