Specialist training programmes

Public Health speciality training

The Public Health speciality training scheme is a five-year postgraduate training programme for medical (with a minimum of two years postgraduate medical experience) and non-medical (with a minimum of five years work experience, of which two years must be relevant to population health) candidates to become a consultant in Public Health medicine. The recruitment process typically commences in November each year, with successful candidates starting their first placement the following August.

Trainees in the London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex training region may undertake a placement in Southwark. Registrars in their first year of training join a consultant section but with project opportunities across the Public Health portfolios. Trainees in their later stages of training may apply to work in specific roles and programmes. The department also provides educational supervision for trainees embedded in partner organisations across our local health and social care system.

For further information on eligibility and recruitment, refer to Faculty of Public Health or the School of Public Health Speciality Training Programme in London and Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Foundation Year 2

Southwark welcomes junior doctors (F2s) looking to gain Public Health experience as one of their rotations. Recent F2s in Southwark have worked on projects that included joint strategic needs assessments (JSNAs) for areas such as bowel cancer, street population and suicide and self-harm. Interested candidates should contact their local deanery for further information.

NHS Management Scheme

The NHS Management Scheme offers an opportunity for all trainees to spend 8 weeks in an organisation of their choice as a flexi-placement. This is a trainee-led experience, which can be undertaken at Southwark. Previous trainees have developed an evaluation framework for our suicide and alcohol prevention strategies, prepared a presentation on health inequalities for local councillors and undertaken analytical work examining changes in life expectancy.
