Household notification letter 2024

We are contacting residents from Thursday 1 February 2024 to help ensure the electoral register is complete and accurate. We need to do this ahead of the Mayor of London and London Assembly elections on 2 May 2024.

You will receive a household notification letter (HNL) either by post or by email. It lists the details of people who are currently registered to vote at each household.

We are asking you to check if the information is correct and report any changes. You can do this via the online response service, using both parts of the security code included in the letter. You do not need to do anything if all the information on the letter is correct.

Reporting the changes means

  • removing residents who should no longer be registered
  • adding residents who should be registered to vote at the household

Report changes at your address

You can also remove a name by emailing electoral.enquiries@southwark.gov.uk.Tell us the name(s) to be removed, your address, the forwarding address, and the reason for the removal (i.e. no longer living at this address / moved out).

You now need approved photo ID to vote in a polling station.

You do not need ID to vote by post.

Who should be listed

Everyone who is eligible to vote and people living at the address who are:

  • 16 years of age or above
  • a British, Irish or European Union citizen, or
  • a Commonwealth citizen who has leave to enter or remain in the UK or who does not require such leave.

Students may register at both their home address and term time address, but can only vote once in the same election. Second home owners can register at more than one address, but only if they are resident in both and split their time equality between the two addresses.

If you are not included on the Household Notification Letter but you meet these conditions, you will need to register to vote. Do this once you have added your name using the online household response service.

Who should not be listed

People should not be included if they are

  • under 16 years of age
  • not British, Irish, European Union or Commonwealth citizens
  • visitors staying at the address temporarily
  • landlords or other individuals who do not live at the address

If you have any questions about how to respond, please email electoral.enquiries@southwark.gov.uk.

The Open Register

The Open Register is an extract of the electoral register, but it is not used for elections. This version can be bought by any person, company or organisation. Your name and address will be included in the Open Register unless you opt out. Doing this does not affect your right to vote or your credit rating.
