Register to vote

You can use the GOV.UK online service to:

• apply to register to vote
• update your details if you’ve changed your name or nationality
• opt in or out of the open register

If you do not have access to the internet or need help filling out the online form, please visit one of our libraries where a member of staff will be happy to help you.

Checking if you’re registered to vote

To check if you’re registered to vote, contact our Electoral Services by calling 020 7525 7373.

You can also inspect the register in person under supervision at Southwark Council Offices,160 Tooley Street, London SE1 2QH.  To arrange an appointment, please email us at electoral.enquiries@southwark.gov.uk

By law, you cannot take any copies of the register, either paper or photographic, although handwritten notes are allowed.

Confirming you’re registered

Please email us at electoral.enquiries@southwark.gov.uk with your full name and address to request a written confirmation of your registration.

If you’re denied credit or are told you have a low credit score because your name is not on the electoral register, we cannot contact credit reference agencies directly to discuss your registration status, your application for credit or people previously registered at your address.

Updating the electoral register

We update the electoral register on the first working day of every month, except October and November.

By law we must contact all households in Southwark every year to update the electoral register - this is called the annual canvass.

To do this we contact residents between July and November to check the details of the individuals we have registered at each address. New residents also need to apply to register to vote separately.

The electoral register is published on 1 December each year.
