Census 2011 briefing

Number of non-UK short-term residents by sex

A non-UK short-term resident is anyone born outside the UK who has stayed or intends to stay in the UK for a period of three months or more but less than 12 months.

The total number of short-term migrants in Southwark on 27 March 2011 is estimated at 3,800, consisting of 1,700 males and 2000 females.

Please note that for 2011 census purposes, a usual resident of the UK is anyone who, on census day, was either:

  • in the UK and had stayed or intended to stay in the UK for a period of 12 months or more, or
  • had a permanent UK address and was outside the UK and intended to be outside the UK for less than 12 months

Therefore, the short-term migrants figure is not included in Southwark’s total population figure.
