Programme goals

Background

In Southwark, Black History Month (BHM) has been celebrated widely for many years honouring the achievements, culture and the history of black people.

Every October Southwark’s community has put on a vibrant selection of events and activities through the grants programme that provides insight into the history and culture of the African, Caribbean and diaspora communities.

Event examples

Please consider the events below which have proven to be popular in the past during BHM:

  • Art and photography
  • Contemporary dance
  • Current affairs e.g. social, political and climate change
  • Film
  • History e.g. neighborhood and family histories
  • Literature
  • Music
  • Sport
  • Storytelling e.g. poetry or spoken word
  • Theatre performances
     

Here are a few examples from previous years events:

  • A 'Britain's Got Talent' style event celebrating Black History and inspirational Black figures
  • Film screenings
  • 'Meet the Author' and other literature events
  • Theatre performances and music concerts
  • Storytelling or spoken word
  • Workshops focused on teaching drama, writing, music and the arts
     

Building futures from the past and Standing Firm in Power and Pride

The theme for BHM 2025 is "Building futures from the past and Standing Firm in Power and Pride," celebrating the significant contributions of Black people throughout the global Black community

It is not compulsory to incorporate this years theme into your event but, applications demonstrating links to the theme are encouraged.

Applicants can apply for up to £2,499 to fund their events. Grants can either supplement the budget of a planned event or provide complete funding for a new event.
