Equality, diversity and inclusion
How we promote equality through our services as a council.
Socio-economic status
Although socio-economic status is not a protected characteristic, we recognise that this continues to be a major cause of inequality in Southwark.
Socio-economic status in Southwark
The English Indices of Deprivation, 2010 tell us that:
- Southwark was ranked as the 41st most deprived borough out of the 326 local authorities in England
- Southwark was the 12th most deprived borough in London
How we promote equality
To support residents we:
- introduced free school meals for all primary school pupils, so there's no stigma of qualifying for free school meals
- work with the Southwark Legal Advice Network for better financial services for Southwark residents
- provide financial support to young people from low income households through our scholarship scheme
- fund Southwark Works which supports unemployed people who need support getting a job
- fund the Volunteer Centre Southwark where residents can gain work experience, while doing something useful for the community
- provide welfare funds like the Southwark Emergency Support Scheme
- have a range of apprenticeships
