Boatyard Health and Safety Project

Located in Surrey Docks, Southwark is home to the only commercial marina in central London. The site provides berths for up to 200 vessels. The South Dock Marina (SDM) complex comprises South Dock and Greenland Dock, offering leisure and residential berths, and includes an industrial boatyard.

The marina boatyard provides repairs and maintenance services to commercial and residential boat owners. Services are delivered by a range businesses and trades people operating in the boatyard from offices and industrial workshops. Boat moving equipment and a large crane nearby are used for boat lifting to facilitate our repairs and maintenance work.

The boatyard also houses several storage containers and a communal facilities unit for residents and businesses. The unit contains toilets, showers and a laundry room.

Over time the condition of the boatyard has deteriorated and the site is in need of essential works to repair its infrastructure and address safety concerns.

The council will deliver a package of health and safety works that includes reconfiguring the boatyard to function better. The project will:

  • improve access to facilities
  • reinforce ground conditions
  • upgrade electricity supplies
  • reposition and build new workshops, offices and storage units

The existing crane which is nearly 40 years old, will be replaced with a new one and have enhanced safety features.

We’ve produced a proposal for the boatyard which is available to download from the Planning Portal and entering application reference 23/AP/3273. Or you can read our project summary and update. (PDF, 3.8mb)
