Community influencers

21 Southwark residents, who are either new to cycling or lack confidence on a bike, are taking up the challenge of cycling as part of our 12-month community influencer scheme.

They will act as cycling ambassadors in their local communities, sharing their stories as part of our Streets for People campaign to promote cycling.

Participants receive professional training, with free use of a bike for a year, as well as lights, locks, helmets, maintenance and insurance. If they successfully complete the 12-month programme, the bike will be donated to them at the end of the year.

The aim is to support residents traditionally underrepresented in cycling or who experience barriers to cycling.

What our community influencers have to say

Patricia on bike

These are some of our community influencers talking about how the scheme is helping them take to the streets on their new wheels.

Patricia

Is the founder of an organisation for the 50-plus Latin community in Southwark. She has always wanted to learn to cycle to benefit her health and the local environment.

I hope to be a good example that it’s never too late to learn something new.

Quynh

Cycled as a child but stopped after her twin sister died in a cycling accident.

I have decided to face up to my fear and adopt a healthier lifestyle, whilst trying to help the environment along the way.

Kenneth

Works with young people across different communities, including in disability sports. He has a physical disability and wants to learn about how he can enjoy cycling in an accessible and safe way.

Spyros

Computer engineer Spyros says he spends most of the day sitting in front of a computer. The pandemic made him realise the importance of being fit and healthy, mentally and physically.

We all deserve a healthy way of life and a greener and cleaner borough!
