A new Southwark Pensioners Centre

Southwark Council has committed £1m of Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) toward a new Southwark Pensioners Centre near the existing premises on Camberwell Road. Fraser Brown Mackenna (FBM) is the architect appointed through the ADS 1.1 Framework to design the scheme working closely with the council and Southwark Pensioners Centre.

We will all work to:

  • design and deliver a well-configured centre that is welcoming, accessible and inclusive, stimulating and comfortable
  • improve access for individuals over 50 to support services
  • improve over 50’s health and wellbeing by increasing opportunities to contribute and participate in a range of learning, leisure, wellbeing, and consultation activities
  • encourage people from across the borough to come to this new centre and take part in all it has to offer

We've started finding out what is important to people through an initial consultation at the Older People’s Open Day, staff meetings, members and partner groups and organisations. We received ideas of how the centre should feel and what it should offer to help develop the design brief.

Our design principles are:

  • accessibility for all
  • natural light
  • ventilation
  • acoustics
  • flexibility
  • adjacencies of spaces

The centre will contain:

  • a welcoming entrance and informative lobby space to find out about the Southwark Pensioners Centre and borough wide activities and support services for older people
  • 3 new activity rooms with programmed classes including exercise, arts and craft, talks and film
  • consultation and advisory rooms
  • kitchen and garden space for gathering and sharing food

Public consultation was held in January 2024 and the report will be available soon.

Planning submission programmed for Spring 2024.
