Our climate action plan
The actions we will take to make Southwark a better place to live. Read a summary of our priority areas or download the plan in full.
Buildings and energy
78% of Southwark’s carbon emissions come from our buildings. This includes our homes, schools, leisure centres and other industrial or commercial buildings.
This means a vital part of our action plan is about making these buildings more energy efficient and moving them away from fossil fuels like gas. This will also improve our air quality.
It is also important our buildings are adapted to climate change to protect us from impacts like overheating and flooding.
Homes
We will:
- significantly reduce emissions from council homes and ensure they are resilient to the effects of climate change
- support the retrofit of private homes
Schools
We will:
- make our schools sustainable and resilient to climate change
Council-owned buildings
We will:
- reduce emissions from council buildings and ensure they are climate change ready
- minimise the environmental impact of council operations
Energy
We will:
- deliver resilient low-carbon heat networks
- ready the borough for electrification and support community energy
- generate renewable energy at our buildings
Planning
We will:
- update planning policy so that buildings and places are more sustainable
