Highways projects

The council is responsible for more than 300km of streets in the borough. As a highway authority, we have a public duty to ensure that our streets are safe, efficient, well-maintained and managed effectively to support our communities and their movement.

Visit Southwark Maps for local and borough wide data including transport data.

Currently, with the circumstances around COVID-19, we're concentrating our resources on a programme to introduce temporary measures to support social distancing. We're prioritising areas near schools and shopping parades. Before lockdown, we were working on a programme to be funded by Transport for London (TfL). TfL is currently running on reduced resources and this has paused all London Boroughs’ programmes. The result is that much of our programme is currently on hold and is unlikely to move forward until next year at the earliest.

For these reasons, the construction of the following projects is awaiting funding to be restarted:

  • Bonamy Liveable Neighbourhood
  • St Georges Circus to Falmouth Road cycle way
  • Southwark Street to Southwark Bridge Road (Great Suffolk Street) Cycleway
  • Cycleway 36 (Kennington to Burgess Park)
  • CS4 (Lower Road)
  • Peckham to Rotherhithe Cycleway
  • Dunton Road bus journey time improvements
  • Denmark Hill Station improvements
  • Camberwell traffic management improvements
  • East Dulwich Parking Zone
  • North East Peckham parking Zone
  • The Devolved Highways Budget (DHB) Programme
  • Our Healthy Streets Dulwich

While these projects are on pause, Southwark Council is reviewing the existing proposals and assessing where benefits to COVID-19 recovery can be achieved by using temporary materials to achieve faster implementation.

These projects made good progress before lockdown. We will provide an update when TfL’s funding position becomes clearer.
