Southwark Council has awarded £32,000 in grants to 18 organisations this Black History Month to fund community-led events celebrating Black Britain and the achievements of the black community in the borough.

Events will take place throughout October, meeting the aims of the grant programme including celebrating Southwark’s black community, providing informal learning opportunities, inspiring others and promoting cohesion through diversity.

Events will include community fun days, street parties, arts workshops and film screenings.

The two themes chosen for Black History 2025 are “Building Futures from the Past” and “Standing Firm in Power and Pride”.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Equalities, Democracy & Finance said:

“Black History Month is so important as an opportunity to learn, appreciate and celebrate the contributions of Britain’s black community and for us, our black community in Southwark – a borough rich in black history, culture and diversity.

“Community events are a great way for communities, cultures and generations to come together and hear about the history of the past to inform the importance of what we do today. I’m looking forward to everyone being able to engage in Black History Month and celebrate as one.”

The assessment panel for the grants consisted of a Council Commissioning Officer and two community representatives from Black-led organisations. Their organisations were paid £250 to reimburse them for their time.

Southwark libraries and heritage centre are celebrating Black History Month with free events for all ages during October. You can join author talks, workshops, exhibitions, and creative craft sessions plus much more.

On Saturday 11 October there will be a screening and conversation exploring Black British Hood Feminist practices through music, film, art and community at South London Clore Studio (artwork pictured).

All events including this one will be listed on Southwark Presents: www.southwark.gov.uk/BHM25
