Families in Southwark to benefit from in-person support hubs

21 June 2023

Southwark Council will be making it easier for parents, carers, children and young people to access the help they need by bringing together different services and support under new Family Hubs.

As part of the Family Hubs & Start for Life programme, the council will offer better services in a more joined-up way. This will mean a whole range of new integrated support including things like parenting and feeding advice, support with wellbeing and mental health, and early language development.

The council secured funding from the Government to develop a new way for people to get all the practical support they may need as a family from pregnancy through to young people turning 19 years old (or 25 if they have a special educational need or disability).

Cllr Jasmine Ali, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Education & Refugees, said: “We know how important it is for our children and families to access the support they need in the right place and at the right time. In Southwark, we are fortunate that we can build on the fantastic work of our children and family centres. Our Family Hubs will be a one-stop-shop in the heart of our communities that make it simpler for people to get the help the whole family needs. We’re working closely with families, as well as partner organisations, across Southwark to make sure Family Hubs respond to their needs and we give every child the very best start in life.”

Southwark is one of 75 local councils across the country taking part in the Government’s £300m Family Hubs & Start for Life programme.

The first Family Hub is due to open later this summer, with more hubs to open across the borough later this year.
