Building works have reached the roof level at a new development in Peckham Rye which is providing 23 new council homes for local people. Southwark Council and building contractor Equans held a topping out ceremony to celebrate the progress milestone on Tuesday 6 June 2023.

The Rye Hill Park development sits on a former garage site and will provide a part-four, part-six storey building made up of a mix of one, two and three-bedroom council flats. Southwark Council is also improving the children’s playground and outside communal spaces as part of the development.

Cllr Helen Dennis, Cabinet Member for New Homes and Sustainable Development, said: “It’s fantastic to see the progress made on these new council flats which are excellently located with wonderful panoramic views of London. These new homes are surrounded by the green spaces of Peckham Rye Park and the mix of large and smaller units means that they will provide homes for a range of people and families in housing need in our community.”

Ken Weller, Contracts Manager at Equans, said: “Equans is delighted to be involved in the construction of Peckham Rye flats for Southwark Council. It was a special moment for the Equans build team, led by Project Manager Stewart Rae, to show around Cllr Helen Dennis and Southwark Council officers as to the progress made, and we are looking forward to providing high quality build flats to be enjoyed by the local community for years to come.”

In line with Southwark Council’s local lettings policy, at least fifty percent of the new homes here will be offered to local tenants in housing need in the immediate area, so they can stay close to friends, family and the services they already use. The remaining homes will be allocated to others on the council’s wider housing waiting list.

The building works are expected to finish in early 2024.
