Local Millwall FC players, Jordan Archer and Ben Amos, joined Southwark Council’s Cllr Richard Livingstone and lots of very excited young football fans, to open the brand new, council funded football pitch at the Astley Cooper Estate in South Bermondsey, on Tuesday 22 January.

Southwark Council invested £120,000 in making the football pitch safe, and resurfacing it with brand new third generation Astroturf, in addition to this the council will be upgrading the floodlights around the pitch. The Premier League and Football Association Facilities Fund contributed £30,000 towards the work.

It is hoped that with some encouragement and training from Southwark Council and Millwall Community Trust, young people and adults from the Astely Cooper Estate will learn to perfect their keepy-uppies, striking and goal defence skills, ready for the World Cup in 2022.

The council extends a special welcome to women and girls from the estate and invites them to come along to practise their skills and become the Astley Cooper Estate’s answer to Alex Scott!

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Cabinet Member for environment, transport management and air quality, said: “This is a remarkable new facility and I am happy to see so many local people out today celebrating the opportunities it will open up for so many local people.

“I’d like to thank Jordan and Ben for helping to make this a special event and the Premier League and Football Federation for their support in creating this wonderful facility. I hope it brings a wide variety of local people much joy.”
