Millwall’s Lions are supporting Back the Bakerloo

Millwall has become the first London football club to announce its official support for the Back the Bakerloo campaign.
The extension will dramatically improve transport links - relieving the load on the bus and Overground network, and make the wider South London area more accessible than it’s ever been before. It will also deliver thousands of new homes, including affordable homes, and jobs, supporting the local economy and helping tackle London’s housing crisis.
Steve Kavanagh from Millwall Football Club said: “We firmly believe there is a clear need for the Bakerloo line to be extended in order to ease the pressure on other transport services and, importantly, to improve links for the local community.
“That the extension would also deliver new homes and jobs is a key indicator of its importance to our capital city and we are calling on individuals and organisations throughout London to also get behind the Back the Bakerloo campaign.”
Cllr Johnson Situ, Cabinet Member for Growth, Development and Planning, said: “We are thrilled to have Millwall Football Club on board this important campaign. The extension will make a huge difference to people living and working in Old Kent Road, where there will be a new town centre. The extension is key to delivering more affordable homes, jobs and services to this part of London and opening up new opportunities for people across the city. And of course it will make it a lot easier for football fans to come and support their favourite team down at The Den!”
Councillor Brenda Dacres, Cabinet Member for Parks, Neighbourhoods and Transport at Lewisham Council, said: “It’s fantastic that Millwall is supporting our campaign to bring the Bakerloo line to Lewisham. Every voice that joins strengthens our cause, and this is an extremely strong and welcomed voice.
“The extension to Lewisham and beyond will mean faster and more frequent journeys and better connections to central London. It will link us to every underground line, bring more jobs and homes for our residents and greater opportunities for our local businesses.”
Officers and councillors from Southwark and Lewisham Council will be manning a stand outside Millwall’s grounds at The Den on Saturday 2 March as part of the club’s Community Day. They will be be giving out leaflets, collecting pledges and talking to the fans as they arrive at the match against Norwich.
