Access for estate agents

If you’re an estate agent, you may be breaking the law by helping a council tenant sublet their property and may be prosecuted under:

  1. Accommodation Agencies Act 1953 – which carries a three months imprisonment or a £1,000 fine (or both)
  2. Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 – which carries up to two years imprisonment and a fine (or both).

Our ILATCH tenancy checker will quickly confirm whether an address is a council or leaseholder property.

We’ll provide estate agents one year of free ILATCH access to do property checks. If you're an estate agent wanting to sign up, contact the ILATCH team
