There are training opportunities for staff and volunteers working in Southwark whose work helps people improve their physical, mental and financial wellbeing.

Healthy Weight online training

The Southwark Healthy Weight online training provides a high-quality, evidence-based online training programme that supports health and non-health professionals to feel confident and competent in discussing healthy weight.

There are four types of training available to suit both health and non-health professionals:

  • a bite-sized introductory course
  • a maternity-focused specialist short course
  • a version for all professionals working in Southwark
  • a version for healthcare professionals working in Southwark

Healthy Start training

Healthy Start is a government scheme that provides money for healthy food and milk to women on eligible benefits who are over 10 weeks pregnant or with children under 4, as well as pregnant women under 18 not on benefits.

Training is available for staff from any organisation who engage with families eligible for the scheme. The training covers the purpose of the scheme, what it provides, who is eligible, ways staff can promote Healthy Start, and key messages to communicate to residents.

Falls prevention training

The Community Falls Prevention eLearning is intended for any community staff or volunteers working in Southwark and Lambeth who visit people’s homes. The training aims to promote awareness of fall risks and how these can be prevented.  

Trauma-informed practice online training

Thrive LDN offer free, online trauma-informed practice training designed for anyone in a role supporting others, whether formal or informal. The training looks at how trauma influences and shapes the lives of those it touches. There are three levels of training available: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Breast Cancer Awareness training

This training from the King’s College Hospital South East London breast screening service covers:

  • breast cancer awareness
  • health promotion around breast cancer
  • information about breast screening including uptake, barriers to screening and how to empower people to get screened

You will also have the chance to practice breast awareness on breast models, as well as pick up some freebies and leaflets to support your own health promotion efforts.

TalkCancer training

The Cancer Research UK TalkCancer training is a two-hour session that will help you:

  • understand the key messages around cancer awareness
  • talk to people about how they could reduce their risk of getting cancer
  • help people understand the importance of spotting cancer early and the screening programmes available
  • appreciate and address the fears and barriers faced by people when talking about cancer
  • have effective, supportive conversations about cancer and health
  • understand the impact health inequalities can have on cancer outcomes
  • encourage people to take positive action for their health, use local services and see their doctor with any concerns

The training is normally in English, however, we are offering a limited number of free Cancer Research UK TalkCancer training sessions with live translation into your desired language. We may also be able to adapt the training in other ways to make it more suitable for your community. 

Several other national cancer charities offer free group educational sessions on cancer prevention and the importance of early diagnosis, including Breast Cancer Now, and Bowel Cancer UK.

Health eLearning from NHS England

NHS England offers 33 eLearning sessions covering a wide variety of public health topics. These are freely available to access and include topics such as:

  • alcohol
  • best start in life
  • cardiovascular disease prevention
  • dementia
  • health inequalities
  • homelessness
  • immunisation
  • mental health and wellbeing
  • sexual and reproductive health and HIV
  • smoking and tobacco
