Description

We are familiar with writers like Chaucer, Dickens and Shakespeare who were influenced by the area but the street’s history goes way back before even Chaucer’s time. Local archaeologist at the time, Mike Hammerson, explains why Borough High Street was formed and gives a fascinating insight into the structure of the land during and after Roman times and how discoveries of Roman buildings suggested a connection to the army or government. We also hear from the estate agents Field & Sons, who had a presence on the high street for over 200 years until recently, on how the area has changed. The programme also takes a look at the long tradition of trading in the area via Borough Market which was at the time the programme was made, still a wholesale market selling fruit and vegetables.
