Description

The Hackney not-for-profit leading a sauna revival in the UK is running a one-month pop-up at a South London community garden.

The not-for-profit Community Sauna Baths has been a runaway success since opening in Hackney Wick in 2021, with glowing write-ups in the Guardian, Financial Times and the Sunday Times. The sauna has hosted almost 50,000 visitors, the majority (69%) with zero or only occasional sauna experience.

Now, the organisation is hosting a partnership pop-up with Glengall Wharf Garden in Burgess Park, South London.

The event will run from Thursday 28th March to Sunday 28th April. The two saunas and three chilled, filtered cold plunge pools will be open 7am-9pm on Thursdays and Fridays, and 8am-9pm on Saturdays.

Since both the Community Sauna Baths and Glengall Wharf Garden share the vision to bring communities together around activities that boost wellbeing and are accessible to all, the one-hour sessions will have a sliding fee scale: £10 waged, £6 unwaged, and the option to give an extra £3 if you’re able to.

The event will be the third of its kind at the garden: the previous two weekend sell-out fundraisers, held in November and December, raised over £2,200.

The proceeds from this month-long event will allow the garden to employ a garden host 3 days a week to carry out essential gardening, maintenance and opening the garden to the public.

It will also go towards completing the civic classroom, a solar-panelled event space that can host community events.

Charlie Duckworth, Director of the Community Sauna Baths, said: “The Community Sauna Baths is proud to partner with numerous community gardens, from the Lighthouse & Gardens in Stratford to Story Garden in King’s Cross and Glengall Wharf Garden in Burgess Park.

Long term local resident and volunteer Tiphaine Tailleux said: “We are excited to welcome Community Sauna Baths back to the garden. We are a strong community of local volunteers who are passionate about maintaining this garden as a site for building skills, community and wellbeing for all. The ongoing partnership with Community Sauna Baths allows us to develop the facilities and open the garden for more days, so that more people can enjoy the multiple benefits this site has to offer.”
