MONDAY 4 MARCH 7PM: BOLIVIA: AN INDIGENOUS STORY
A life of protest and activism, and a celebration of Bolivan culture with mother and daughter Miriam Amancay Colque and Yandire.
Join us for a thought-provoking evening and a joyous celebration of Bolivia. Mother and daughter Miriam Amancay Colque and Yandire will share their love of their native country Bolivia, discussing the culture, history, food and political struggle of the indigenous people.
Miriam, founder of solidarity group Bartolina Sisa Resistance and a passionate ally of refugee communities, will talk about her journey from student activism against the bloody dictatorship of Hugo Banzer in 1971, to incarceration in a concentration camp, and finally a new home in the UK.
Miriam is a proud mother and grandmother of Aymara origin and an indigenous Bolivian activist. She is a former trade unionist, human rights defender and passionate advocate of the Migrant and Refugee communities, as well as raising awareness of Bolivian and Latin American issues.
MONDAY 8 APRIL 7PM: STITCHING IN BLACK IDENTITY
Textile artist Celia Johnson on using fabrics, quilting and embroidery to reflect on and celebrate Black identity.
Celia create pieces which are personal, political and symbolic, but are also joyful, as an expression of Black vibrancy, creativity and resilience.
She takes inspiration from the link between the Transatlantic trade of Black people and the mercantile growth, textile production, culture and prosperity of the UK. Using symbolic traditional West African Adinkra as symbols in her pieces, Celia is fascinated by the untold stories of those Black lives and how their suffering echoed through the ages to the recent Black Lives Matter protests.
Celia's quilting reflects on its tradition in marginalised communities, often women, but she also uses the hidden layering of the quilt process as a metaphor of how Black people layer their identity to modify to European norms.
