What you can do
What your business can do
Here are some ways you can help to improve air quality in the borough:
- buy or hire the cleanest motor vehicles available; you may be able to get a plug-in car and van grant towards the cost of each new electric (plug-in) car or van you buy, if it meets certain conditions
- develop travel plans to encourage your employees to use public transport, walk or cycle
- if your employees must drive as part of their jobs, organise eco-driving training for them
- avoid operating in congested areas at peak times as often as possible
- install workplace energy efficiency measures
- freight operators should sign up to TfL's Freight Operator Recognition Scheme
- the Carbon Trust can help you examine your company's energy profile and use it to significantly reduce costs and the impact of your Carbon footprint
- if your company emits dust, fumes or solvents into the air
- if you're a construction or demolition company, find out how to control emissions from your activities
- get involved with a freight quality partnership or arrange for low emission deliveries and collections
- use Deliver Best, which can help you make your deliveries more efficient
- if your business is in construction, you need to be aware of Southwark’s Demolition and Construction Technical Guide (PDF, 1.4mb), the London Low Emmission Construction Partnership ‘Best in Class’ Guidance and the Considerate Constructors scheme
- ensure vehicles and plant on and visiting your sites meet the current requirements of the Low Emission Zone and Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ)
