Get help to cope with rising costs

If your main or only income is the  State Pension, you may be able to get more help with the cost of living  – but you must apply  now

From  winter 2022, more support is available to older people who get a State Pension. You will only be able to get the extra help, if you first apply for Pension Credit. More than 7,000 people like you in Southwark already get Pension Credit.  Don’t miss out.  If you join them by applying now you will get:

  • a one-off Cost of Living payment of £325 to help with the cost of living this winter
  • another £900 next year
  • £150 Warm Home Discount
  • free NHS prescriptions, dental treatment and sight tests
  • more help as a senior citizen guaranteeing the security and dignity in your retirement you deserve.

Think of the difference that would make.  It’s easy to apply.

Claim Pension Credit

If you'd like help to apply, there are lots of friendly local organisations that can help you, including Citizen’s Advice Southwark, Age UK, Link Age Southwark, Time and Talents and Southwark Pensioners Centre. Please call 020 7525 5000 (select option 3) to speak to someone who can help you find a local drop-in session.

When you apply, you will need the following information with you:

  • Your National Insurance number
  • Your bank account details and recent bank statements
  • Information about your savings, and investments (if you have any)
  • Information about your state retirement pension
  • Information about any other pensions you get
  • Details of any housing costs you have (eg mortgage, service charges)
  • Your husband, wife, or partner’s details (if you have one).

You can apply online using the Government website

A friend or family member can call for you if you cannot use the phone.

Apply by post for Pension Credit

To apply by post, you can print out and fill in the Pension Credit claim form or call the claim line on 0800 99 1234 to request a form.

Send the filled-in claim form to the Pension Service at the address below or ask someone to do it for you.

Documents you will need to apply for Pension Credit

To apply for Pension Credit will need the below information for you, and your partner if you have one:

  • your National Insurance number
  • your bank account details
  • information about your income, savings, and investments (if you have any)
  • information about your state retirement pension (if you get a state retirement pension)
  • information about any other pensions (if you have another pension)
  • details of any housing costs you have (such as a mortgage, interest payments, or service charges)
  • your partner’s details (if you have a partner)
