Nunhead Library turns 120 years old and gets £130k refurbishment

7 December 2016

Southwark Council, as part of its library investment programme, has spent £130k modernising the community space to bring it in line with other libraries in the borough.

The library was last refurnished 20 years ago but has now been renovated to enable events to take place in the central area of the building. There is also new shelving layout, a new self-service kiosk to enable customers to issue and return books themselves and increased seating areas.

The children’s library has also been reworked to maximise space for children’s story time events.

In keeping with the council’s aim to make the library more community focused, a new ‘reading garden’ will be created at the front of the building and volunteers will be drafted in to organise a gardening group to help maintain the outdoor space. There are also plans to establish a Youth Forum, a dedicated group of young people to help develop library services at Nunhead.

Councillor Johnson Situ, Cabinet Member for Business, Employment and Culture: “This is a momentous year for Nunhead Library and I’m so proud that we’re able to celebrate by improving it for future generations to come.

“Like all our libraries, Nunhead plays an invaluable part of local life, from literary events for young people to providing internet access for residents; these benefits are exactly why we’re continually investing in the service and have even opened new libraries in the borough.”
