From October 2011 most on-street properties will be able to recycle
their food and garden waste together. Collections for food and garden waste will be weekly.
We will be providing all properties new to the service with a
kitchen caddy to help you collect your food waste in the kitchen. Additionally, all included properties
are being provided with a year's supply of compostable food waste bags. If for any reason you do not have
either a caddy or a supply of compostable bags, please contact us using the contact details on the side of this page.
How the service works
Please make sure that you only use compostable bags to collect food
in, as plastic bags will not break down during our composting process. If you run out of compostable bags at
any time, please contact us.
Once a food waste bag is full, it and its contents can be placed in
your large brown wheeled bin along with your garden waste. If your property does not have the
space or need for a large brown bin, we will have provided you with a smaller,
more suitable bin.
Items for your brown bin
- Meat fish and bones (cooked or raw)
- Fruit and vegetables
- Bread, rice and pasta
- Eggs and diary products
- Tea bags & coffee grounds
- Plate scrapings
- Plants, twigs and branches
- Grass and leaves
- Shredded paper (if there's a large amount,
otherwise use the blue box)
If you have a composter you can
continue to use it as you normally would. Your weekly food waste collectons can
be used for items that would not normally go into the composter such as meat,
fish and bones.
Items not for your brown bin
- Cardboard (unless it has been spoiled by
food or liquids)
- Glossy paper (this should go in your blue
box)
- Plastic bags or liners
- Flower pots or trays
- Soil, stones or bricks
- Japanese knotweed
- Large tree branches (more than 10cm/4
inches thick)
- Furniture, fencing, MDF or treated wood
Using your brown bin
Your brown bin is designed to contain food waste securely to prevent
pests. Try to keep the lid of your
bin closed and keep the bin out of direct sunlight. Please do not overfill the bin so that the lid won't shut
completely as leaving the lid open may encourage pests.
