If you want to purchase a home of your own, but can't afford to buy on the open market, Help to Buy could be your way onto the property ladder. The Government has created the Help to Buy scheme to help you take your first steps into home ownership.
Staying in your current home
We believe everyone should have the opportunity to live in a decent affordable home in an area they want.
If you choose to stay in your current home, we can help you resolve issues such as:
- problems with a private landlord
- antisocial behaviour
- help with empty properties
- energy efficiency
- mortgage problems
- renting problems

We're committed to developing more homes for social rent and aim to build 1,500 new council homes over the next three years. However, only a small proportion of properties are vacant for letting every year.
We let 1,500 properties last year, housing around 13% of the 11,500 households on our housing register. Less than half of these properties had more than one bedroom. Regrettably, even people in the greatest need often face a delay of several years before they get housed.
We've had tenants on the housing register tell us that they would have considered other options earlier, such as moving into private rented accommodation in cheaper areas, had they known the unlikelihood of being housed. Regarding being rehoused, tenants said they would have considered downsizing or swapping homes had they known the unlikelihood.
