Working together to improve cycling

Together we can make cycling safe and accessible for all

We are working together with local people, businesses, schools, universities and community groups, to help more people to cycle. Especially for those short local journeys to the high street, or school.

Local cycling group

We work with Southwark Cyclists, a local cycling campaign group that wants safe, simple and accessible cycling for local people. Together we are working with the London Cycling Campaign, to make cycling safer and better in Southwark.

Helping you to cycle safely in the borough

You can visit Better Bankside in the north of the borough for electric bike loans, free bike safety checks, help to protect your bike from theft, and more.

Team London Bridge can help your business to be more sustainable with cargo bike deliveries. They also offer free bike safety checks and other events from their base in London Bridge.

Free bike repair workshops

Community Cycleworks is helping Southwark residents get on their bikes and learn new skills through free drop-in bike fix workshops.

Learn how to repair and look after your bike with a qualified mechanic, get practical cycle training and help with planning your cycle route at workshop-based sessions.

The workshop is based near Burgess Park and is located behind the walled area on Portland Street right next to the Michael Faraday School.

No booking is needed and drop-in sessions for women and LGBTQ+ run on Friday from 3pm to 6pm and Saturday from 10.30am to 12pm. Anyone can drop-in on Saturday between 12pm to 4.30pm.

This work is funded by Southwark Council as part of Streets for People, which supports cleaner air; safer and quieter streets with less traffic and fewer accidents and healthy travel options like walking, cycling or wheeling.

Fix A Bike workshops for schools

Through Streets for People Community Cycleworks run Fix A Bike, working with schools across Southwark to educate classes of up to 30 students, about how to carry out basic bike repairs and how to plan a cycle journey.

Over 62% of students have never tried to carry out a repair before on their bikes before attending a workshop, with courses being run in primary and secondary schools.

Community Cyclworks outreach workshops can also be held at community spaces and youth clubs, providing equipment including mechanics, work stands, and tools.
