Quietway 7 - Elephant and Castle to Crystal Palace

Quietways are a network of bike routes for less confident cyclists using mainly low-traffic back streets. The routes are not just for current cyclists, but are for people who have always been put off cycling by the thought of sharing the road with high volumes of cars, vans, buses and lorries. Introducing Quietways forms an integral part of the Mayor of London’s vision for cycling and the council’s objective to significantly increase the number of residents using cycling as their preferred mode of transport, particularly for local journeys.

  • consultations for this route were carried out in 2015 and 2016
  • Southwark Council has formally approved the delivery of Quietway 7 proposals subject to statutory procedures, detailed design and safety review - see documents related to the decision making process (please note that sections of the route in Lambeth are subject to a separate approval process)
  • detailed design is progressing on all proposals approved
  • construction is currently programmed as per the table below - see our download section to print off a copy our April update (pdf, 162kb) (more details on this programme will be provided in future updates)

Update on specific sections of the route

Camberwell Grove to Champion Hill

The original proposals that went through public consultation are not viable, and therefore the route will be implemented with no traffic management measures on this section. Although currently no measures are proposed along this section, the council is committed to exploring all options to improve conditions for all road users along this corridor.

The following traffic studies are currently being undertaken to carefully review the impact of any possible traffic management changes on local and wider road network.

  • Study 1 Area wide traffic modelling: A modelling study to gain an initial understanding of the impact of various traffic management changes along the proposed Southwark Spine cycle route and Quietway route, and their likely impact on other roads in the area
  • Study 2 Evaluate the impact of Camberwell Grove bridge closure on the wider road network

Timescale for above studies: An update on the outcome of the above studies will be provided to Camberwell Community Council in summer 2017.

Greendale cycle path

The council has secured funding from Transport for London to introduce a CCTV camera along this corridor to help address anti-social behaviour. Updates to be provided in a future bulletin.
