Buses in Southwark – have your say

Our general concerns

Buses are very important for Southwark which, unlike many boroughs, doesn’t have many tube stations. Buses are a cheaper and convenient way to get around our borough, to and from work, and to the West End and other places that people like to shop, visit, and go out in.

We're worried that cutting the number of buses and bus routes in Southwark will:

  • mean residents have to change buses more often to complete their journey, particularly at night, often having to walk some distance to do so
    • we're worried this increases the risks to the safety of many residents, particularly women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and children and young people
  • push more people into their cars, damaging our work to tackle the climate emergency by encouraging more people to walk, cycle and use public transport instead of driving
  • mean we don’t have enough public transport to serve our growing population in areas like the Old Kent Road and Canada Water
    • we're building more homes for local people and we need more buses so they can get around with good regular services
On 23 November 2022, the Mayor of London said that bus services that were going to be cut in Southwark would be saved, including the 12, 45, 78 and N133. This is a fantastic win for our campaign and for our residents.
