Description

For this Black History Month, Raven & Rain invites a French Caribbean Gwo Ka troup to come and perform a theatrical dance, complete with songs and stories. They will reveal the hidden messages in the steps of the dancers and the lyrics of the songs. This is no mere entertainment, but the story of our past and how far we have come as a people. Gwo Ka has witnessed first-hand our passage from slavery to liberation.

We want the public to capture the past: Even in their pain and struggles, the slaves were still inventing sophisticated ways to cope and communicate. It is a wonder and a beauty to observe how dancing and singing could be such a powerful instrument for bringing hope, relief and resilience.

We want to re-enact this dance and songs as a reminder of the hardship we faced as a people and, most importantly, as a reminder of our resilient spirit and tenacity in the pursuit of freedom. This serves as a constant testimony for us, in the present, that our ancestors danced their way into freedom, paving the way for us to dance in freedom, and as a result, we are standing firm in power and pride.
