Description

MOLA are currently undertaking archaeological investigations as a part of the development Kings Place, Southwark. A “Pint of Archaeology” is inspired by the archaeology of the site and surrounding area.

Horsemonger Lane in Southwark (now Harper Road) was once home to the Surrey County Gaol. Opened in 1798 and closed in 1878, this was one of Georgian and Victorian London’s notorious prisons. From murderers to coiners, debtors to enemies of the state, thousands were held here. And in the 80 years it was open, 135 people were executed on the prison roof in front of huge crowds. Join us at the Roebuck Pub in Southwark to hear stories of some of the real people imprisoned here, and ask yourself - did the punishment fit the crime?

We are inviting local communities and interested individuals to come and chat with the archaeologists about the discoveries and even try your hand our ancient games.

Pint of Archaeology: stories from Horsemonger Lane Gaol is brought to you by the Unite Students development at King's Place, Southwark.
