ABOUT UMAT

In March 2018, UMAT was established by vocalist Stephen Pierre as a grassroots community music company (CIC) based in London.

Operating as a not-for-profit group, our primary objective is to showcase and support the talents of both emerging and established creatives, while also contributing to the community and advocating for worthy causes. We prioritize the promotion of equality and diversity in all aspects of our work. Our collective of musicians comprises students and alumni from top music conservatories in London.

UMAT was nominated for a Mayor of London Culture and Creative Award in 2019, following the popularity of The Bermondsey Square Jazz Days and Live Music Events held at the Bermondsey Blue Market.

The organization’s efforts were also recognized with a Southwark Business Excellence Award in 2020 for its Contribution to the Community. In May 2021, UMAT organized its first outdoor jazz event at St John’s Church Garden Waterloo, which was acknowledged as part of London’s Festival of Ideas Summer 2021

UMAT’s next major achievement came in June 2022, when it hosted its first outdoor jazz event at The Palm Tree Pub in Mile End, situated in East London’s Victoria Park. The event was highly successful, and the venue drew much attention
