About the free, healthy schools meals programme
At the beginning of 2011 we ran a successful trial of the free, healthy school meals programme in ten Southwark primary schools. In September 2011, the programme was extended to all primary schools in Southwark, initially to specific year groups.
Free, healthy schools meals is a policy we believe can make a significant difference to children's lives, education and futures. It's an investment in the health and wellbeing of local families.
Southwark has one of the highest child obesity rates in the country and free, healthy school meals will enable to us to combat obesity in the borough. Obesity is currently estimated to cost the NHS £4.3bn a year. With that figure set to rise, the free healthy school meal programme could not only potentially save money in the long run, but will also improve the health and wellbeing of all the borough's primary school children.
