The recording of thoughts, observations, feelings and experiences in a personal journal, whether hand-written or in digital form, can be a powerful tool for self-discovery.

Going beyond simple notetaking, it can help improve mental well-being, track the progress of a creative project, or help increase self-awareness and expression. Journaling can not only help retrieve memories but can also help you to live more fully in the present.

This course is for those who are completely new to journaling, those wishing to try new ways of journaling and those interested in exploring a way forward with a current journal.

How the course is taught

The course includes:

  • practical writing exercises
  • readings
  • tutor-led talks and feedback

You'll experiment with different writing techniques and there will be opportunities to share your experience of journaling in a supportive atmosphere.

At the end of the first session you will be given a small amount of homework.

A pen and notebook.

After the course

On completion, you'll feel more confident applying your skills to various writing tasks and writing creatively about other subjects. You can enrol onto further courses with other providers such as Morley College or City Lit.
