This course, part of our new special interest offer and additional to our GLA-funded programme, is open to anyone aged 18 or over.
Join us for this one-day, full-of-fun workshop designing, making and decorating a Picasso-style face ceramic planter pot. Suitable for everyone, with or without experience of working with clay, you can practise some simple techniques and bring out your creative side too!
You'll learn how to:
- design your planter using a range of visual resources and the templates provided
- create a cardboard model for the planter and its relief facial features
- roll out a slab of clay
- mitre and join edges to make a cylinder and learn how to join this to a base
- cut the decorative features from clay
- add texture to your clay pieces to create more interesting surfaces
- attach the decorative elements to your planter to create a fun, relief, portrait effect
- decorate your planter using colour slips and underglazes
How the course is taught
Throughout the workshop, you’ll be guided in a hands-on, engaging way through:
- demonstration, practical tasks, discussion (group and one-to-one discussion with the tutor)
- a supportive and collaborative learning environment so that learners can share ideas and help each other
- visual resources of various types with templates for your design
What to bring
Materials and firings will be covered by your course fee but you may like to bring a pen/pencil and a notebook.
Your item will be bisque fired after the session and a transparent glaze applied by the technician who will re-fire the piece a second time to a glaze temperature. You will be able to collect your finished item at a later date.
