This course is suitable for adults of all levels who want to develop their skills in African-style dressmaking.

Timetable, fees and enrolling

This course is for adults of all sewing abilities who want to learn how to develop their skills in African-style dressmaking.

What you’ll learn

Beginners will learn:

  • how to measure the body and record the body measurements
  • how to cut directly onto cloth to make basic drawstring skirts and kimono or kaftan tops
  • basic sewing machine skills 

More advanced learners can explore:

  • alternative African dress and skirt styles
  • decorative details and advanced finishing techniques
  • how to change parts of the garment, like necklines or sleeves

How the course is taught

Courses are tutor-led, with demonstrations and one-on-one support. Learners will have opportunities to support and learn from each other through group discussions of work in progress and finished work.

What to bring

You'll need:

  • a folder
  • blank A4 paper or a notebook
  • pen
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • eraser

You may like to bring your own fabric scissors, threads, tailors’ chalk, tape measure, needles and pins. 

The £5 materials fee for these courses covers items used in the first few weeks of your course. For future projects, you will need to provide your own fabric, threads and other relevant materials.

After the course

Attend further fashion, textiles or crafts courses at Southwark Adult Learning Service, City Lit or Morley College.

Former learners have gone on to start their own businesses or into paid and voluntary employment.
