Facts about the regeneration

  • £4bn is being invested in the neighbourhood by the council and our partners
  • at least 5,000 new and replacement homes are being built and at least 1,650 of these will be affordable new homes
  • we're building 11,000 council homes across the borough and this includes Elephant and Castle where new council flats have already been delivered at St Mary’s Churchyard
  • the shopping centre will close in autumn 2020 and will be redeveloped as part of a new, pedestrianised town centre
  • 10,000 new jobs are being created and Lendlease, alone, expects to create 6,000 construction jobs as well as thousands of training and apprenticeship opportunities

  • more than £140m is being invested in transport improvements: the road system has already been reconfigured; the subways have been filled in; new cycle lanes have been built and a new ticket hall will be built for the Northern line tube station
  • more than £240m will be invested in education and culture in the area
  • a new £20m leisure centre was completed in 2016
  • three new public squares have been built and £6m is being spent on improving local parks
  • the Elephant Park development includes central London’s first major new park in decades
  • Elephant Park is one of only 18 projects globally to be included in the Clinton Climate Positive Development programme for carbon positive development
  • 1200 trees are being planted in Elephant and Castle
