Commenting on planning applications

You have at least 21 days from the date a planning application is published to give your comments.

In the planning register, select the application you want to comment on. Then, choose make a public comment.

What you can comment on

You can comment on:

  • the design and size of the development
  • the proposed land use
  • traffic and parking
  • if it will be a nuisance because of noise
  • if it will affect a neighbour’s daylight or privacy
  • how it complies with our planning policies and guidance
  • benefits to the community
  • any other relevant material planning or environmental issues

You need an account to be able to comment.

Using the register

Any comment you make about an application must be available to the public. This means your comment will be published on our website. We will not publish your personal information. We usually will not publish anonymous comments.

Use the planning portal's glossary if you come across unfamiliar terms in a planning application.

Comments take a day to publish on the planning register.

Unless you have selected to track on the planning register, we won't normally contact you.

Search for an application

The quickest way to search for a planning case is using the reference number.

You can search for planning cases by the following means:

  • simple, quick search by keyword, application reference, postcode or a single line of an address
  • advanced search using alternative references, filters or date ranges
  • weekly or monthly lists, searching using lists at the community council or ward level
  • property search using address and A to Z street search
  • map search, viewing all live applications in Southwark using our interactive map service, apply filters on the type of application and time frame to review

Planning reference number formats

Planning reference numbers are formatted as below, where Y denotes year, and N denotes number:

  • an application is YY/AP/NNNN, e.g. 25/AP/1234
  • appeal is APPEAL/YY/NNNN, e.g. APPEAL/25/1234
  • enforcement is YY/EN/NNNN, e.g. 25/EN/1234

To save a search:

  • follow the first steps, as above, to search for the application
  • when at the application summary page, click on the ‘Save search’ button, on the right-hand side
  • select ‘Yes’ to be notified by email about new search results
  • the saved search will now show up in your ‘Saved Searches’ on your profile

Track an application

To track an application, search for the application using the council reference number. When at the application summary page, click on the ‘Track’ button, on the right-hand side.

This will add the application to your profile and send you notifications directly concerning any updates.
