Source: Summary of housing approvals 2004 to 2019 - Sheet 1: Overall by tenure; Summary of housing completions 2004 to 2019: Sheet 1: overall by tenure

Over the past 15 years (2004 to 2019), the council has approved more than enough homes to meet the housing target with an annual approval of 2,757 units. Between 2004 and 2020, the number of homes completed was 24,512 units, averaging around 1500 per year and delivering over half (56%) as much the approved average. The approval of schemes does not necessarily mean they are delivered. Nonetheless, the statutory planning function of the council remains to be one of the most powerful and crucial instruments to manage development positively and generate potential for increased housing delivery.

Please note that approvals and completions within a given year should not be compared as the figures relate to different schemes. The delivery of the approved schemes does not come forward at the same rate. Over the reporting period, some of the major schemes contributed a significant number of new self-contained homes, including:

  • Phases of the Bermondsey Spa regeneration programme
  • Neo Bankside
  • Ontario Point of the Maple Quay regeneration scheme at Canada Water
  • The Silwood Estate regeneration scheme
  • Elephant Park
  • Manor Place Depor Site
  • Phases of Decathlon Site and Mulberry Business Park
