Housing facts and figures 2004/2005 to 2021

This Authority Monitoring Report (AMR) provides the housing data in Southwark between 2004/2005 to 2018/2019 collated from the LDD in September 2019, as well as completions in 2019/2020 sourced from the Greater London Authority (GLA).

To establish the housing supply position of Southwark as of March 2021, we received from the GLA a report of completions in Southwark between 2019 and 2020 to facilitate our analysis of housing delivery for the year, alongside the historical data between 2004 and 2019.

The London Planning Datahub is currently replacing the London Development Database (LDD) as a tool for recording development. As this tool is being updated, this report will be updated when further housing data, including approvals, is available from the new data store.

We value accountability and transparency as a public authority and have collected planning data on housing which is set out in two spreadsheets to accompany this report. This enables access to the wide-ranging data and a review of housing delivery in the borough against our policy requirements. The data consists of all completions and approvals across different themes between 2004 and 2019, alongside the completions in 2019/2020, which together form the figures in the following tables (with reference provided).

The statistics include aspects such as the number of homes permitted and delivered, affordable housing breakdown, family housing supply, scale of development and non-conventional accommodation.

Technical remarks

The Mayor of London also publishes the London-wide Authority Monitoring Report, which may vary slightly to those presented on Southwark webpages, with LDD being continually updated and run at different times by the respective authorities, leading to slightly different results with data amended in between.

In this AMR, the total net completions (1,996 units) represents an uplift of 87 units from the net figures (1,909 units) set out in the GLA report we received, having addressed the following errors found in the report:

  1. The record includes 86 existing homes to be demolished on schemes that were yet to be completed in the 2019/2020 period. This figure is now subtracted from the AMR and will be accounted for when the related schemes are completed in the future;
  2. Unit data found to contain ‘0 number of bedrooms’ has been removed on the grounds of data validity.
