Heritage SPD

The Heritage SPD ^{(PDF, 14.6mb)} was adopted on 19 October 2021.

The SPD provides detailed guidance on how to apply the relevant policies of the Southwark Plan and the emerging New Southwark Plan concerning our historic environment. The SPD also sets out further advice on how we expect development to be consistent with wider national and local legislation and policy, within which the council must operate.

The SPD has been written to provide a better understanding of heritage matters and terminology and to provide clear advice on the conservation, preservation and enhancement of our historic environment. It has been designed for a wide range of readership, including, applicants, building owners residents, planners, community groups and developers.

In light of the council’s commitment to becoming Carbon Neutral by 2030, the SPD also sets out the considerations that will need to be had in order to better support the retrofitting of heritage buildings to help reduce carbon emissions.
