Sutherland Square

The Sutherland Square Conservation Area is situated to the west of the Walworth Road and the mainline railway into Elephant and Castle. The earliest properties are around Sutherland Square and date from the beginning of the 19th century. These houses on the former pleasure gardens of Walworth pre-date the railway and are typically 3 storey. The houses on Lorrimore Road are later and are in the form of terraces or linked blocked of 2 to 3 storys. The terraces are contemporaneous with 4 storey blocks on Carter Street. The heart of the conservation area was extensively damaged in World War II. The St. Wilfred’s RC Church and the developments fronting onto Penrose Street and Eglington Court form part of the post-war rebuilding in the area.
