Conservation areas

St. Saviour’s Dock

The St. Saviour’s Dock Conservation Area is located south of the River Thames and extends a short distance eastward from the dock and includes the buildings in Shad Thames on the western side. The southern boundary of the conservation area is formed by Jamaica Road. The key to the character of the conservation area is its relationship with the River Thames, with its tight frontage of the warehouses accessed by narrow streets. There is a good deal of consistency in materials and aspects of detailing that reflects the relatively brief development period in the second half of the 19th century. Across the conservation area facades have been designed on classical principles, most of the warehouse buildings retain a plain simplicity, but in some of the later buildings, a little more decoration is apparent.
