North East Peckham: Zone ‘T’ review and extension

North East Peckham: Zone ‘T’ review and extension is a proposal to implement parking restrictions to prioritise parking for residents in the streets south of Old Kent Road.

Scheme objectives

The existing Zone ‘T’ roughly covers the streets between Old Kent Road and Bird in Bush Road. We would like to review the existing parking restrictions in Zone ‘T’. Permit requirements in some streets were removed in 2006 and we would like to determine whether this arrangement still works or whether we should reinstate the permit requirements.

The proposed extension to Zone ‘T’ roughly covers the streets between Bird in Bush Road and Goldsmith Road / Meeting House Lane.

See a map of the Zone ‘T’ and the proposed extension (PDF, 620kb) here.

Old Kent Road is preparing for significant development over the next decade, including up to 20,000 new homes, linked with the proposed Bakerloo Line Extension. This means the surrounding areas are going to see an increase in demand for parking. By implementing a parking zone now, we can ensure that ‘car-free’ planning restrictions are imposed so that residents of these new developments would not be eligible for a permit for Zone ‘T’.

As part of this project we'll also be providing secure on-street cycle parking. We'd like to know if residents would like to take up the opportunity of a space in one of these hangars to store their bike.

The aim of this project is to:

  • prioritise space for local residents, businesses and their visitors
  • prevent commuter parking
  • improve access for vehicles - especially emergency service and refuse vehicles
  • improve road safety by removing obstructions and providing better visibility at crossing points
  • reduce inconsiderate parking
  • enable planning conditions to be placed upon future developments to prevent parking in the area
  • reduce the dominance of parked cars on a street, enabling other use of that space
  • provide secure on-street cycle hangars where they are needed

Timeline / programme

  • scoping + initial design - January to February 2020
  • consultation - Currently on hold
  • outcome and reporting of consultation - Autumn / Winter 20/21
